The Slovenian Museum of Natural History also cooperates with the National General Post Office on the subject of postage stamps with naturalistic motifs. Hence, a stamp with the motif of the lower jaw of a cave lion from Postojna Cave was issued within the Fossil Mammals of Slovenia series. The remains of the fossil jawbone are among the first specimens brought to the Slovenian Museum of Natural History in the mid-19th century. The original cave lion’s lower jaw is currently on display in the Museum’s exhibition hall, with the stamps on sale at Slovenian Post Offices from 17 March 2017 onwards.
You can read more about the jawbone, the cave lion and its contemporaries in the Bulletin of the Slovenian General Post Office.
