Anton Ramovš: 100th anniversary of the birth of the geologist and paleontologist

His research mainly focused on fossils from the Palaeozoic beds of Karavanke, Škofja Loka and Polhov Gradec hills and Ortnek in Dolenjska. He pioneered the study of microscopically small conodonts, which helped to solve many puzzles about the age of rock strata.

Woolly rhinoceros in Slovenia – the surprise of the decade!

In 2023, the museum received the first fossil remains of a woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis). The tooth is one of the most important paleontological discoveries in Slovenia in recent decades.

Tanzanite – a gem variety of zoisite

Tanzanite is a violet blue to blue violet gem variety of the mineral zoisite. Its diversity from Tanzania is represented by Dr Clemens Schwarzinger, professor, collector and gemcutter.

Eggs, nests, birds …

On occasion of the Easter holidays, we present some of the egg, nest and bird specimens held in the ornithological collection of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. The entire collection currently includes 239 bird nests, and 1482 inventory units of bird eggs (each unit can contain between 1 and 14 eggs).
