When archaeologist and geologist Dr Srečko Brodar excavated in Ajdovska jama near Nemški vas near Krško in mid-1938, he could not have imagined that the excavated palaeontological heritage of this site would soon be destroyed. It was a lucky coincidence that of all the bone remains, which were dominated by cave bear bones, only the skull of an Alpine marmot (Marmota marmota) and the recently rediscovered lower jawbone of a wolverine (Gulo gulo) survived. Today, both remains of these ice-age animals are safely preserved and housed in the palaeontological collection of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History.
