Dr Angela Piskernik’s Algae Herbarium incorporates 13 specimens of 11 taxa. She collected algae in 1912, when researching at the Marine Zoological Station in Trieste (Die K.k. Zoologische Station in Triest), then part of the University of Vienna (Zoologische Abteilung der K. k. Universität Wien). In the 1910-1914 period, Dr Piskernik studied natural sciences in Vienna and in 1914 became the first Slovenian woman to obtain a PhD with a topic on the physiology of mosses – Die Plasmaverbindungen bei Moosen. In 1912, as evident from the labels, she collected some of the algae together with Nestor Hamorak, who was also engaged in plant physiology. His doctoral mentor was Prof Dr Hans Molisch, who was also a PhD mentor to Dr Angela Piskernik. With him, Dr Piskernik continued her studies of plant anatomy and physiology in 1920/21.
