Scopolia magazine is the newsletter of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. It publishes original contributions related to the activities of the museum, which deal with issues from the fields of botany, zoology, geology, paleontology and museology.

Editorial policy
Manuscripts submitted to Scopolia must be original in that the information is not copyrighted, published or submitted elsewhere. Submissions are read by two referees and the Editor-in-Chief is responsible for all publication decisions.
The Editor, the Editorial Board and the Publisher of Scopolia are bound to ethical standards accepted in the international scientific publishing and stipulated in the Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors by the Committee on Publication Ethics.
Manuscripts must conform to standards of responsible authorship in the following ways:
- All the Authors must accept the responsibility for the entire content of submitted manuscripts.
- Authorship should be restricted to those who have made significant contribution to the conceptual design, the implementation of the study, data analysis or writing the manuscript.
- The authors must describe relevant safety, regulatory, and ethical standards regarding animals used.
- Papers based on research that does not appear to have paid proper regard for conservation and animal welfare considerations may be refused, especially when associated with the killing of or damage to threatened species or those listed in Red Data Books appropriate to the geographic area concerned. The same holds for possible adverse consequences of research work for ecosystems, populations or individual organismsIn all cases, the final decision will rest with the Editor.
- Manuscripts must be free of any kind of prejudice, including gender, national or racial stereotyping.
Subscription of manuscripts
All manuscripts must conform to the present “Instructions” presented herein. Authors should also consult the most recent published papers for current format and style. Manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor at his Email address.
Preparation of manuscripts
Manuscript can be published as original research papers, reviews, collection catalogues or special issues. Contributions are not restricted to their length.
Language
Manuscripts can be submitted in English or in Slovene, or in both languages. Manuscripts in Slovene must have a comprehensive summary in English. Titles, abstract and keywords must be in both, Slovene and English. Additional summary can also be in a language spoken in the region, i.e. in one of Slavic languages, Hungarian, Italian, or German. The Publisher can provide translations to Slovene for non-Slovene authors. Non-English speakers are strongly encouraged to have their manuscripts checked by a native speaker before submission.
Format
- Manuscripts must be prepared in 12-pt font size, double spaced throughout, with 2 cm margins in A4 letter-sized document. Do not right justify the text. Use only lowercase letters.
- Provide line numbers and page numbers.
- Full references of citations in the text must appear in the “Literature” section, and vice versa. References within the text body are quoted by the author names and year system and, if appropriate, by page number(s). If the reference consists of three or more author names, the first name is followed by et al.
- Italics are used only for species/genus names. Please, do not italicize standard Latin abbreviations like et al., i.e., ca., vs., etc. Small Capitals are used for except for quotations of the authors’ names.
- Headings should be on separate line. The hierarchy of the sub-headings should not exceed three, and they should be used only when a sub-section contains at least two full paragraphs. In the text, one-digit numbers should be spelt out except as part of date, a fraction of decimal, a percent or a unit of measurements. Use Arabic numerals for numbers larger than nine, except as the first word in a sentence; avoid starting sentences with numbers.
- Vernacular names of organisms, if not derived from geographic or personal names, are written with small initials. At first mention in the text, provide the vernacular name, the full scientific name (genus and species) and the authority of studied organisms; thereafter, use either the scientific or the vernacular name consistently.
- Scientific names should follow the International Code for Zoological Nomenclature (http://iczn.org/iczn/index.jsp), the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (Melbourne Code) (http://www.iapt-taxon.org/nomen/main.php).
- Each voucher specimen described or mentioned must have been deposited in an appropriate (preferably public) institution and bear collection’s acronym and a catalogue number.
All the manuscripts should be divided into: Abstract, Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Literature.
- Title should be on a separate page (Title page), together the name(s) of author(s), the complete postal address(es), e-mail addresses and a running title of maximum 50 characters. Pager footnotes are allowed on this page only. Superscript Arabic numerals are used to link the authors’ names with their affiliations. Each affiliation should be on separate line. Please, indicate the corresponding author. The title must be concise. Where appropriate, include mention of the family or higher taxon. Authors of scientific taxa should be omitted. If both the vernacular and scientific names are used in the title, then the latter may be separated by comma (but not placed in parentheses). but informative synthesis of the study.
- A concise abstract should not exceed 200 words, in which the main results and conclusions are described briefly. References should not be included unless they are absolutely essential.
- Up to 3-6 keywords (or compound words), specific for the article, should be listed after the abstract. Do not repeat words already contained in the title.
- The Introduction must provide information on the problem within the context of existing knowledge.
- The Material and Methods section must explain methods used in the field, cabinet or laboratory. Avoid excessive details of the procedures and leave out the type and make of instruments or chemicals used unless they are not widely available. A brief description should also be given on the statistical analysis of the data, with mention of the statistical tests used. Report museum vouchers used here or in the Appendix if a list is excessively long.
- The Results section should be concise and restricted to necessary information and interpretation. Only material pertinent to the subject may be included and quotations should be avoided. All tables and figures must be referred to in the text.
- Discussion provides an interpretation of the results obtained in light of past and current research. A Conclusion section may be added, particularly if results and discussion are combined.
- Acknowledgements should be concise but must include all who provided financial, collaborative or other support.
- References must be arranged in alphabetical order of the senior author’s name, than by the alphabetical order of the junior author’s name, and then chronologically by date. Journal names should be abbreviated according to the World List of Scientific Periodicals. For non-Roman alphabets, the names of authors, journals, and publishers should be given in transliteration using British National System for Transliteration. Parenthesize translation into English of non-English references and mention in brackets the original language (e.g. in Slovene with English summary). - Insert Tables after References (or the Appendix). Each should be on a separate sheet of A4 paper with the caption given at the top. Tables must not be repeated in Figures or in text, and vice versa. Vertical lines should be avoided. If abbreviations are necessary, these should be explained in the caption.
- Figures must be submitted in digital form as TIFF or JPG formats at resolution yielding 300 dpi. Captions to figures should be typed as a separate section of the manuscript.
Processing of manuscripts
Evaluation: Submitted papers will be evaluated independently by two peers selected by the Editor-in-Chief. Manuscripts will be refused without review if they address inappropriate topics or have not been prepared in the appropriate style, format, linguistic or scientific level associated with the journal. The corresponding author will be informed immediately when a decision has been made on manuscript acceptability.
Proofs: One galley proof will be sent to the first (or corresponding) author. Extensive alterations are not allowed and will be charged to the author. Corrected proofs must be returned as soon as possible.
Copyright: After acceptance of a manuscript the Author(s) must agree with the transfer of copyright to the publisher.
Offprints: Following publication, the corresponding author will be provided with an electronic PDF copy of the published paper and with 50 paper reprints. Further paper copies can be purchased; please contact the Editor.
