The specialized library acquires, preserves, researches, presents, and processes natural science literature in accordance with modern library principles. It provides access to historical and literature supporting the fields represented in the museum and maintains bibliographies of museum staff’s work.

We lend materials for use in the reading room (6-12 seats) or for home use. Advance notice is appreciated. If you cannot visit the library in person, you can borrow literature based on a written request, either by fax or email.

The initial stages of collecting literature date back to 1821 when the Carniolan Provincial Museum was established in Ljubljana. Following its independence from the former National Museum, the Natural History Museum of Slovenia was founded in 1944, and since 1989, it has housed a specialized library.

The entire collection of monographs and periodical publications in the fields of geology, paleontology, mineralogy, biology, botany, zoology, entomology, ornithology, museology, and other areas comprises over 20,000 items. The library also houses a significant collection of valuable rarities among its older materials, which hold great historical value.

Since 1989, a professional librarian has been responsible for cataloging materials, providing information and reference services, handling loans, interlibrary loans, compiling bibliographies for staff, preparing publications for exchange, and more.

A written order or your prior announcement of the visit is desirable. We borrow literature for use in the reading room (6-12 seats) and/or at home. Copying and/or scanning of the material is permitted in accordance with copyright law.

Office hours for rental: Monday – Friday from 8.30 to 11.00.
